Aung Kam Restaurant

Thai food differs with many styles from the main regions around the country. Lately, we have been concentrating on great tasting dishes coming from the mainstream areas of Thailand, including the Central and North East regions.

tTo carry on we searched out and found a restaurant in Pattaya specializing in Northern Style Thai Cuisine. It is called Aung Kam and is located on 3/137 Third Road in North Pattaya, next to the Golf Driving Range.

This perfectly charming restaurant has been running for 7 years and is owned by Mr. Kaoru Saito and his wife Khun Puk who welcome their guests to enjoy authentic Northern style Thai recipes created by Chef Khun Nung Luk.

As like all regions, dishes from the Northern Region of Thailand, especially areas around the cities of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai have developed their own identity by using local produce to create a number of unique dishes, some spicy hot, some not; but all different and delicious with an emphasis on aromatic spices.

The fan and air conditioned restaurant on two floors is very comfortable with a welcoming atmosphere provided by the rich wooden dcor throughout which is traditionally Northern in style with a touch of Burmese and Japanese influence in its seating arrangement, especially upstairs (which is mainly used for private functions) with its banks of low wood lacquered tables and cushion seats. (The Japanese influence coming from Mr. Saito). As for the restaurants title, Aung Kam is named after the exotic jungle wild orchid found in the Northern Region.

The menu is quite wide, and is explained in very good detail with pictures and text as to what each dish tastes like (especially as to its spicy strength). For those unfamiliar with Northern Thai tastes there are 4 Set Menus at 399 baht with selected dishes to get an introduction to a true Northern Style meal experience.

All the al a carte dishes (including a good range of vegetable recipes) are extremely well priced ranging from 59 baht for various appetizers such as Spring Rolls and Crispy Pork Skin Crackers to 289 baht for whole fish (Sea Bass and Cotton Fish) recipes.

We began with a variety of delicious savoury side order dishes starting with platters of appetizers. A selection of meats (139 baht) including the house specialty marinated Northern Style Sausage (which is freshly made in the Aung Kam kitchen) that came both deep fried and steamed and is a big hit (and rightly so) with regular customers. Then there were stir fried mini Pork Ribs and thin strips of Pork and Beef Fillet and Liver, all to be eaten with a selection of pickles and relishes (including raw garlic pearls, ginger and chili peppers) to enhance and bring out the tangy flavours of the meat. The Crispy Pork Skin Crackers were perfectly accompanied by a delicious Nan Prik Oan, being a dried Green Chilli Dip pounded with Garlic, Onions and Tomatoes (spicy but not hot). We tried Rice Noodles (79 baht), a medium hot Northern Chiang Mai favourite dish with Pork fillet and a fragrant Coconut Milk Sauce. There were three curries to try; Orm Curry (95 baht), which was a hot spicy red Chicken dish and a mild Hung Lay Curry (95 baht), which is a Burmese style dish made with chunks of tender Pork, Onion and Garlic. And finally, Kao Soi Kai (79 baht), a medium hot Chicken breast Yellow Curry. All were served with steamed Rice and very tasty Sticky Rice. For dessert we tried one of the healthy recipes being a distinctly good tasting Pumpkin Meatballs in Coconut Milk and Egg (35 baht). Do try one of the restaurants special healthy and refreshing drinks served hot or cold, including Lemongrass, Tamarind, Ginger and Pandarus. They also serve a good selection of beers and wine by the glass for 120 baht. Aung Kam Restaurant is well worth a visit if you want to try tasty and different dishes from a region renowned for sophistication and refinement. Open every day (except second Tu
