We went along to see what Irish restaurateur Michael (Googie) OBrien has to offer at his second restaurant OBriens, which opened in great style last weekend.
Well, as Googie says Cead Mile Failte (one hundred thousand welcomes) and here at OBriens you will get an Irish welcome which goes beyond a mere smile. In fact, the smile has got even bigger! OBriens Restaurant located on Soi Day-Night 2 is sure to be another hit, with Executive Chef Ra and his friendly staff offering delicious honest to goodness food at very reasonable prices just like its nearby sister restaurant Googies. OBriens, which seats 50 guests inside and out on the terrace area, is decorated in a modern non fussy style with an upright piano (which will be used soon to entertain guests) and prints of 19th Century Dublin and Irish landmarks. The menu is excellent ranging from great value All Day International Breakfasts (from 130 baht) which will surely become very popular to homemade Soups (55 baht), Snacks such as Baked Potato from 85 baht, Burgers from 160 baht, 7 different styles of Pies (from 220 baht) and generously filled freshly made Sandwiches from 95 baht. The Breakfasts includes ala carte where one can make up ones own breakfast to suit your appetite with portions costing from 15 baht for eggs to 75 baht for Parma Ham.
For the extra hungry there is the challenge of the Super Large English Breakfast with just about everything on the plate for 260 baht. The regular menu offers a great selection of starters such as Chefs Salad at 75 baht to a generous portion of Norwegian Smoked Salmon on Farmer Bread at 125 baht. There are excellent Meat recipes such as Pork Chop with Mashed Potato, Peas and Gravy at 205 baht. Try a generous portion of tender Roast Beef at 285 baht or a top quality prime cut of T-Bone Steak for 340 baht with all the trimmings. For fish lovers there are great Fish dishes available, including traditional Fish and Chips (205 baht) and Pasta delights such as Spaghetti Carbonara (190 baht). House specialties include famous Irish dishes such as Beef and Guinness Casserole, Corned Beef and Cabbage or Bacon and Cabbage (all at 280 baht) and the delicious Dublin Coddle (190 baht). OBriens offers a Special Daily Set Menu (250 baht) and Sunday Specials (270 baht) which is great value for a starter, a main course, dessert and tea or Mokador coffee. There is also a very good Thai menu with 22 tempting traditional dishes to choose from 110 baht. The drinks are very reasonable especially from 9.00am to 5.00pm when all beers cost 55 baht. Very good quality Italian wine is a reasonable 110 baht for a large glass. We sampled a good assortment of specialties, including the famous and delicious Irish recipe dish Dublin Coddle, which is sliced Pork Sausage, Bacon, Vegetables, Rosemary and Potato Potage (a very filling thick soup). Another Irish specialty arrived being Irish Stew (180 baht), tender pieces of Lamb cooked with Vegetables and Rosemary in a delicious thick Sauce. We then tried a generous plate of thinly sliced Smoked Salmon on Farmer Brown Bread (120 baht) which is a great appetizer. Next to the table was a top quality prime Norwegian Cod Steak in Crispy Batter, Thick Fries and Peas (320 baht). This was followed by one of their great all day breakfasts, so we tried the Irish Breakfast; a hearty plate filled with Eggs, Pork Sausages, Back Bacon, Baked Beans, Fried Potato and Onions, Black Pudding and Fried Bread, excellent value at 185 baht. We then tried two Thai dishes, the popular Tom Yum Gung (Spicy Prawn Soup) and Sweet and Sour Pork, both authentic and delicious at 110 baht each. So all in all a very good meal; but dont take our word for it, go along and enjoy OBriens yourself. OBriens Restaurant is open every day from 10am till late. Telephone: 038 411 125
