P.S.C. GOLF FROM TROPICAL BERT'S August 5th: Laem Chabang Stableford Fourteen enthusiastic golfers met at Tuesday morning to test their mettles against the challenging Laem Chabang golf course.
The weather was fine, except for a strong breeze which maliciously blew against us all day long. This was reflected in the low scores, with not one player reaching within 3 strokes of his listed handicap. But the wind seemed to briefly aid reigning "Golfer of the Year", Perry McNeely, who on Par 3 A5, hit the pin in his tee-shot, with the ball coming to rest a mere six inches past the hole. He, alas, was not on the leader board for the day. But this was undoubtedly the "shot of the day" (for which there is no prize). I think it was on C5, a Par 3, when we were putting-out, that a little mynah bird landed and started hopping around the flag which was lying on the ground. He seemed quite friendly and hopped over to me, nibbling at my pen. After we moved on to the next tee, he followed and my caddy was able to hand-feed him a piece of fruit. In spite of the squawking of the mynah's disapproving mother, high up in nearby tree, the caddy was able to pick him up and the set him upon my hand. From there he climbed up my arm and perched on my shoulder for a few minutes before flying away in pursuit of his mother. After the round, we headed to the clubhouse restaurant for a nibble and tipple. I ordered the celebrated Masaman curry, but sadly (for me) Anders Pedersen got the last order. Then we repaired ourselves back to Tropical Bert's Bar to drink to the day's achievers: First Place: Steve Hamstad (33 pts) Second Place: Walter Baechli (32 pts), winning on count-back Third Place: Anders Pedersen (32 pts) Near Pins: Perry McNeely, Mick Omeara (2), Steve Hampstad Long Putts: Anders Pedersen & Dick Warberg Report by: Thomas Cotton Photo subjects: Walter Baechli, Steve Hamstad and waitress
