Papa David Restaurant


As was our curiosity, we paid a welcome return visit to a very popular and well known cheap and more than cheerful great value restaurant in Jomtien, none other than Papa David.

Since February 1st 2005, this English style restaurant located near the Hanuman Statue has become an institution and is personally run by Papa David (from Rochdale in the North of England) where he has been serving good old fashioned English recipes at extremely fair prices. Favourite dishes such as Liver and Onions (180 baht) and Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding (230 baht). Otherwise try English Pork Sausages, Peas and Mash or authentic English style Meat Pies (200 baht), Cornish Pasty or Sausage Roll at 235 baht and all served with Chips and Peas. There is also a variety of popular snacks available including Burgers and Fries (150 baht), Jacket Potato with fillings from 80 to 130 baht, and for the really hearty eater, interesting Pork and Chicken recipes from 180 to 220 baht.

The Steaks are extremely well priced from 270 baht to 295 baht for T-Bone with all the trimmings. There is also a daily Special 3 course meal at a very reasonable 290 baht and good value Sunday lunch from 250 baht.

The decor inside the fan cooled open plan restaurant is reminiscent of what one would find in quaint English pubs; which is smart without being unduly fussy or over cluttered with curios, that all add up to a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

The restaurant has an excellent selection of great value All Day International Breakfasts ranging from a mere 35 baht for a budget breakfast to 245 baht for a Super English Style Breakfast, and it is the breakfasts that Papa David has become renowned for. Indeed, he has many regular customers who turn up every day to sample his famous breakfast extravaganzas. The menu ranges from set breakfast dishes to an ala carte breakfast list to create ones own meal, including best Back Bacon (35 baht) and quality Pork Sausage (50 baht) specially prepared for Papa David by a well known local butcher.
Papa David also has a very interesting Thai menu, with the most asked for dish being Pat Pak Ruan,(145 baht); a recipe of spicy Prawns or Squid served with Rice and other wonderful Thai ingredients. Another favourite is the spicy Tom Yum Khung (150 baht).

We decided on two starters, delicious Smoked Salmon with Farmers Bread (155 baht) and a very tasty Holland Beef Croquette (95 baht). The excellent and moreish brown bread is baked in a local English bakery in Jomtien.

For our main course we ordered two house favourites, Steak and Kidney Pie with Sausage and Mash (200 baht) plus Norwegian Cod and Chips (290 baht). A traditional English style pie with typical short crust pastry and filled with tender pieces of Steak and Kidney. The Pork Sausages are indeed first class; full of meat and no fat or gristle.

 The helping of Norwegian Cod and Chips was also well received and tasted as good as it looked with good crispy batter coating a fillet of quality Cod. The Fish tasted good with a firm and chunky texture. The Chips were great, and most surprisingly the dish came with a traditional English serving of Mushy Peas. One could say there is not much to say about Mushy Peas, but be assured what Papa David serves up is a typical North England treat.

We finished off our meal with another popular English favorite, Rhubarb Crumble and Custard (135 baht). A simple dessert prepared to the highest quality. Papa David buys fresh Rhubarb and his baker friend supplies the rich pastry case. Add a serving of freshly made Custard and you have a winner! Decent tasting house wine comes at 110 baht a glass.
