This week we visited one of Pattayas finest French restaurants, the Bordeaux located on Soi Day-Night 2, off South Pattaya Road to discover what gourmet creations are on offer.
On entering this delightful restaurant, the chic decor delivers a mood reminiscent of many a good restaurant back in France that promises a top class eating experience. Indeed, the owners, Bruno and Luc are well experienced, being restaurateurs back in Paris for many years before coming to delight the palates of Pattaya gourmands just 3 years ago. For lovers of French food, the menu delivers a grand selection of traditional classic and regional dishes and Thai cuisine and over the 3 years since opening it has established itself with a wide body of regular customers, including a few very discerning French expats there this night who all seemed to approve of what they were eating. The spacious restaurant is conveniently split into two sections, one enclosed and air conditioned and the other fan cooled, and each is subtly different in decor. Tables are well presented with white and pink tablecloths and good sturdy cutlery. The air conditioned area has comfortable yellow leather chairs, whilst the fan cooled area (for smokers) has pink leather seating. Together with an assortment of discreetly placed plants, paintings and subtle lighting, it all adds up to a very refined yet relaxed atmosphere throughout. Even the background music is unobtrusive and at just the right level. The menu written in English, French and Thai, offers a fine assortment of traditional French fare. Apart from the ala Carte, there are two very good set menus that are changed daily at 290 baht for 2 courses and 390 baht for 3 courses. On the menu today were a good choice of Salads such as Provencal or Herring Salad and main courses including Stuffed Pork and Spinach or Coq au Vin. The A la Carte offers a good selection of entrees such as Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese, Tomato and Olives (160 baht) or Beef Carpaccio with Parmesan Shavings and Olive Oil (180 baht). Fish and Seafood lovers will adore the Pan Fried Scallops flambeed in Cognac, Provencal Style (360 baht) or Sea Bass Fillet with Caper Sauce (280 baht).
Top quality Meat recipes, which includes a very popular dish of Steak Tartar and French Fries (330 baht), Coq au Vin (290 baht) or go for a house specialty Chateaubriand steak at 540 baht. There are 22 traditional Thai dishes on offer, from humble Steamed or Fried Rice to extremely colourful Spicy Salads and Curries from 95 to 130 baht. As we looked through the menu, we chose a cocktail called Rainbow, a colourful blend of Gin, Vodka, Curacao and Grenadine, that besides tasting refreshing had a powerful punch at 160 baht. After a complimentary Amuse Bouche starter, we sampled the Gazpacho Soup (150 baht), an unusual and good tasting cold Melon Soup with Slices of Parma Ham. Very refreshing! Then two delicious French specialty starters, Snails in Puff Pastry and Mustard Sauce, and Smoked Salmon and Parma Ham Rolls with White Asparagus (240 baht). For the main course, we chose the plump and full of flavour pan friend Scallops and an excellent cut of Beef Tenderloin Steak with Pepper Sauce (both 360 baht). All served with a choice of Potato and Vegetable selection. So it was then time to attack the Desserts! And what a choice around 150 baht! It seemed we zoomed in on two popular favourites at Bordeaux, Chocolate Profiteroles; a delicious light and crispy Choux Pastry Casing containing Orange Ice Cream and smothered in Hot Chocolate Grand Marnier Sauce. Yummy! The other was Floating Islands, Meringue with Toasted Almonds and Vanilla Sauce Say no more
