Yet another worthwhile trek out to Jomtien to experience the gastronomic delights of the trendy Tomas Wine Bar and Restaurant, located at 125/18 Jomtien Beach Road, past the second police box opposite Soi Chaiyapreuk. Tomas is expertly run by veteran restaurateurs Mathieu Corporaal and Khun Chaweewan (Tik) Phoothaworn both of Tulip House fame; a truly wonderful Dutch restaurant also located on Jomtien Beach Road.
Named after Mathieu’s 9 year old son, Tomas opened in July 2009 and is undeniably a beautiful and elegantly decorated restaurant and wine bar with a spacious outdoor terrace (al fresco) eating area that has an enviable view over the bay. The food and service is equally impressive as Tomas is continuously amassing a regular clientele throughout the week and has fast become one of Jomtien’s premier haunts offering first rate cuisine at amazingly fair prices.
Like any quality restaurant, Tomas presents a sensible and skillfully arranged menu with a selection of carefully chosen dishes prepared with the freshest seasonal ingredients. It is arranged with a tempting number of appetizers ranging from around 190 baht for Parma Ham and Melon or Scallops in Cream Sauce. Throughout the day one can enjoy a good assortment of Soups, Sandwiches and Burgers around 110 to 160 baht. For a light meal try one of the Pasta or Pizza dishes all around 150-195 baht. From the main dishes, which has a fine selection of traditional Meats, Seafood and Fish dishes, one can choose recipes such as Chicken Stuffed with Spinach (310 baht); excellent local Tenderloin at 395 baht right up to 780 baht for top quality New Zealand T-Bone Steak. Tomas also provides a very extensive range of Thai cuisine with authentic dishes around 150 baht.
So to the proof of the pudding! We tried three appetisers: Beef Carpaccio and Mussels in Garlic and Cheese Sauce. Excellent textured pieces of air dried Beef, Gherkin slices and shavings of Parmesan Cheese smothered with Virgin Olive Oil; plus an equally luscious plump New Zealand Mussels dish served with a perfect Garlic and Cheese Sauce. Both at a very reasonable 190 baht! The other appetiser is a house specialty, a simple yet flavorsome homemade Chicken Liver Pate served on Toast and at 150 baht – a bargain!
We then tried a first class Grilled Lamb Cutlet dish served with a beautiful tasting Anchovy Garlic Butter Sauce (395 baht). Again from the grill section it had to be a house specialty; New Zealand Tenderloin Steak, a prime cut of ‘top of the bill’ tender Beef Steak for 780 baht. Both served with a choice of Potato, fresh Vegetables and Salad. Being a Wine Bar, there is a very good wine cellar with fine international wines ranging from 780 to 1,500 baht a bottle. So, for a quality good value dining experience, visit the elegant Tomas Wine Bar and Restaurant on Jomtien Beach Road.
