During the early hours of the 29th March, Pattaya Police received a call that an attack on a tourist was going on at the beach opposite the station. Officers quickly went out to investigate at the crowded scene. There they came across a male tourist lying injured and unconscious on the ground. Nearby was the suspect male attacker being held by local people. Intoxicated, the man, Boonmee Arunsawat, aged 33, claimed that the tourist came up to him to find him a prostitute. He was deeply offended by this and an argument ensued resulting in him hitting the man over the head with a metal umbrella stand. However, a witness came forward and stated that the tourist was set upon by the drunken man, who was known to be a thief. He attempted to steal from the tourist but he fought back, resulting in the Thai picking up the umbrella stand and hitting the man several times. The tourist was taken immediately to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital to receive treatment and the suspect was taken to the police station for further questioning.
