New teachers are learning too, and City Hall is trying to help this year’s crop of 150 newly-appointed teachers find their footing. Tuesday morning, teachers and newly-appointed school directors from all schools in Pattaya attended a special orientation at City Hall.
This orientation focused on the real-life experience of teaching now that they have positions in school settings. Teachers undergo a rigorous examination process before being allowed in the classroom. In return, Thai teachers are treated with a great deal of respect from students; for example, the practice of “wai Kruu” day, or literally “praise the teacher” day shortly after the beginning of the new year, where student offer gifts to the “ajarn” and promise obedience.
The meeting emphasized the special relationship the teachers will have with their students, forming a bond much like a parent’s with each child. The goal is for each teacher to grow as a teacher and ultimately be a role model for each student.
