The Village Chippy

There is something very satisfying about eating good old fashioned British style Fish and Chips, and lucky for us, there now a number of traditional ‘down to earth’ Chippies appearing here in Pattaya. One such venue that certainly exudes nostalgia is the recently opened “The Village Chippy”, opened by two expat English entrepreneurs, Paul and Brian, who have seen the niche for demand in traditional Fish and Chips plus, at extremely fair value for money prices.  “The Village Chippy” is predominantly a takeaway, with a small number of tables and seating outside for customers; as its main clientele come for the quick and efficient take away service.    The main fayre is of course Fish and Chips! Servings are a generous size, with excellent quality Fish and wonderful chunky Chips.
Chips are made from imported Dutch Potatoes and are served chunky style at 40 baht for small, or 60 baht for a large portion.  So far, three varieties of Fish are on offer.  A local white Dory that is used for the main Fish and Chips offerings at 95 baht for medium or 120 baht for an extremely large portion. There is also imported Cod; with a medium cut of prime Alaskan Cod at 120 baht or 180 for a large piece. The third variety is Australian Flake (Shark); which turned out to be one of the star dishes we sampled.  Extremely good value at 140 baht, one gets a huge cut of delicate tasting white flaky fish, coated in their own ‘secret’ crispy batter!  Absolutely first rate!  Large servings of homemade Fish Cakes, made with Cod, Potato and Parsley, are sold at 30 baht each!    Like most Fish and Chips outlets, “The Village Chippy” serves a selection of Pies – also at very fair prices, such as Steak and Kidney or Chicken and Mushroom at 85 baht.  They also sell an excellent tasting Steak and Kidney Pudding (90 baht) – a dish which has become a huge hit with many customers!  And one can see the reason why!  Using traditional steamed Suet Pastry, this first class Pudding is deep filled with quality chunks of Steak and Kidney in very tasty gravy!

Side dishes include excellent large crunchy Pickled Onions at 15 baht a serving, old fashioned British style Curry Sauce (30 baht) and first rate homemade Mushy Peas at 25 baht, plus traditional Bread and Butter at 20 baht.

Soon, another British favourite will be appearing next door – The Village ‘Chinkie’ – a takeaway and restaurant serving what promises to be authentic Hong Kong-British style Cantonese Chinese dishes for the first time in Pattaya.  One can’t wait!   In the meantime, come along to “The Village Chippy” and experience original British fast food grub!

“The Village Chippy” is located 40 meters inside The Village on Pattaya Third Road, opposite the Pattaya Fire Station.
