Anti-monorail protesters were out in force on Wednesday at the flyover bridge to Balihai Pier. Over 150 local residents who are opposed to the construction of a downtown monorail system gathered together to protest against City Hall with the slogan “Pattaya people say NO to the monorail!” The Mayor commented that everyone has the right to express himself or herself and City Hall is willing to listen and accept all suggestions and comments. He wants people to know the city administration wants to work with residents, as long as everyone obeys the law and is working in good faith.
The Monorail Project was one of the campaigns presented to voters when Mayor Ittipol Khunplume ran for election under the slogan Tam Jing – Tam Dai which, roughly translated, means “Do it for real, and we can do it”. The Mayor has been trying to get this project off the ground, but some officials claim more studies still need to be done, even though two surveys have been done already. Most residents feel it is up to the people to decide the future of this project.
