Papa David

We had been invited to do a write up at Papa David restaurant a few weeks ago but sadly had to postpone it as Papa David himself was down with a bad case of flu.
So, as was our curiosity, we returned this week and we were very glad we did. On arrival we were greeted by a much better David and he told us about his restaurant. Originally located at Soi Day/Night for just over 2 years, he decided to relocate and opened this restaurant on February 1st, 2005 in the newly built complex near the Hanoman statue, Jomtien.
The spacious fan cooled restaurant seats 44 customers. The decor inside is quite like what one would find in a quaint English pub, which is very smart, without being fussy or over cluttered with curios. The tables are covered with rich maroon and gold colored tablecloths and the rattan chairs are very comfortable, that all adds up to a very cozy and relaxing atmosphere in the room. The friendly waiters are casually dressed in blue shirts and black trousers.
To quench our thirst we had a glass of delicious tasting freshly brewed iced tea as we then searched through the Papa David menu to see what was on offer. The ala carte section mainly has a selection of good old fashioned English recipes such as Liver and Onions, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Sausages and Mash and English style crusty Meat Pies. There is also a variety of popular dishes such as Cheeseburgers, Jacket Potatoes, Steaks, Pork Chops and Chicken fillet. Papa David also has a very extensive Thai menu, and the most asked for dish on offer is Pat Pak Ruan, a recipe that has spicy prawns or squid added to rice and other wonderful Thai ingredients.
The restaurant has a very good selection of All Day Breakfasts from around the world, and it is this that Papa David has become renowned for. Indeed, he has many regular customers who turn up every day for one of these excellent breakfast meals. They range from set breakfast dishes to an ala carte breakfast list, where one can individualize ones own breakfast. Papa David uses the best back bacon and quality pork sausages in his breakfast recipes.
We decided on a Tomato Soup and a Mixed Salad as starters. The large bowl of soup had a very rich tomato taste, being freshly made from ripe tomatoes, good stock and cream. This was accompanied by a plate of Farmers Bread, excellent brown bread that is baked in a local English bakery in Jomtien.
The mixed salad was of good quality lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and onion rings. It had a good crisp texture that blended well with the 1000 Islands dressing and another helping of the moreish Farmers Bread.
For our main course we ordered a good old favourite, Spaghetti Bolognaise and Norwegian Cod and Chips.
The spaghetti was perfectly cooked al dente and the excellent meat sauce together with a generous helping of parmesan cheese was well approved of by my pasta loving friend.
The enormous helping of Norwegian Cod and Chips was also well received and tasted as good as it looked on the plate. The dish had a very good crisp batter coating a fillet of excellent quality cod. The fish was chunky and tasted succulent One could tell that the cod was from the Norwegian seas. It had a firm and chunky texture. The Pacific Cod has a flaky and less firm texture. The chips were great, and most surprisingly the dish came with a traditional English serving of wonderful tasting Mushy Peas. One could say there is not much to say about mushy peas, but I assure you that what Papa David serves up is delicious. This was a truly Northern England dish to be recommended and at a very reasonable 220 baht. To be fair, Papa David hails from Rochdale in the North of England an area famous for singer Gracie Fields and fish and chips and mushy peas.
We finished off our meal with another popular English favorite, Rhubarb Pie and Custard, which tasted amazing.
