Last week we were invited to a rather unique restaurant called The Stone Oven, which is on Soi 6 off Pattaya Beach Road.
It is run by two Scandinavian Fashion celebrities, the Danish designer couple Lykke and Peter Miller, who are well known to European media, and have now opened their 5th restaurant this time in Pattaya.
Lykke and Peter Miller have stayed on top of the European Fashion scene for more than a decade and are known as the designers behind famous brands as Missinglink and In Wear. Latest is their exclusive children line Miller Junior which is represented in more than 500 retailers and department stores in Europe.
Lykke and Peter have stayed abroad for almost 20 years. First in Turkey and latest in India. Their latest fashion line Miller Bis (made in Thailand) has brought them to Thailand, where they recently established an export office and design studio in Bangkok.
However, Peters second passion has always been fine foods and fitness. This has resulted in 5 restaurants - run as hobby projects. Twp in Copenhagen, two in New Delhi and now their first one in Pattaya, The Stone Oven.
The restaurants are a mix of the best of the best from Europe; some French, some German, some Italian, and some Greek. However, in India the only European kitchen known to consumers is the Italian. STONE OVEN is there marketed under Italian Flag to make the concept easily understandable.
Athletic Peter explains the concept: We are not in any way a boring slim line/ health restaurant, but we do look at the nutrition value of every dish being served. I have personally lost 30 kgs in one year by following the general principles of the Atkins philosophy, so we do consider high protein and low carbohydrate contents.
The interior in the 40 seater restaurant, which has been in operation for 2 months, leaves no doubt the two fashion designers have been working a unique combination of French high tech and romantic Mediterranean ambience. It works a charm, being both a bohemian and fashion fusion of tastes.
The prices are not low, but definitely fair considered all ingredients are imports of finest quality. The staff is all English speaking and is informal and charming. In fact, the whole restaurant is very casual, with customers being welcomed to visit the upstairs spacious and clean kitchen and fashion studio area.
We visited Stone Oven on a normal boring low season Tuesday and saw that Peter and Co had already attracted quite a crowd of dynamic active Pattaya customers. Many of the clientele are sports and fitness trainers and diving instructors from nearby venues. The menu is quite extensive with snacks and selections of different types of bread such as Panini, Baguettes, Pita all filled with delicious ingredients from Peters original recipe There is a worldwide selection of excellent pizzas plus a decent assortment of meat and seafood dishes.
We first tried a variety of starter dishes, including Hong Kong Prawns, which was a generous portion of succulent tiger prawns that had been marinated in ginger, soy, grape juice and was decorated with asparagus tips. Then along came the Champignon ala Cr่me dish, which was mushrooms in a lemon cr่me sauce, containing capers, parmesan flakes, parsley and oregano.
This was followed by an excellent Cr่me of Seafood dish containing a variety of seafood in a rich cream sauce.
For the main course we sampled a great Australian inspired Surf and Turf, a blend of seafood and extremely good beef tenderloin. The Steak B้arnaise was similarly great tasting and very tender. We were then treated to two delicious pizzas; one being a wonderful Fruit du mer (seafood) pizza and the other a Greek Pizza, which had a delicious selection of grilled aubergine, marinated beans, feta cheese, black olives and a specially grilled meat made up of minced chicken that had been marinated for 24 hours and then fast cooked for 4 minutes. Unusual and delici
