Merit Making Graveyard Clearance Ceremony in Huay Yai
To Western eyes a gruesome yet deemed necessary ritual began on Tuesday at a graveyard in Huay Yai belonging to the local Sawang Rojana Foundation. There began a traditional annual merit making ceremony followed by the digging up of 1021 coffins buried there since 1993. The coffins will be opened and the corpses ceremoniously cleaned of all remaining flesh, before being cremated according to Buddhist religious belief. Attending the ceremony were representatives from Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, who had donated a pickup truck to use in the annual ritual.
