What might you ask is Restaurant 99?  Well, it is a brand new restaurant located on Soi Khao Talo, on the right hand side going up from Sukhumvit Road, directly opposite Ayudhya bank and Tops supermarket.  Only opened three weeks ago, we went to visit this week to find out what the place has to offer.  Well, as the name suggests, virtually all dishes on the menu cost a mere 99 baht each!   So, what is the catch?  None!  The quality of the food is first rate, with the bonus that this particular restaurant is a branch of a very familiar restaurant in Jomtien.  It is none other than the well established Papa David, which is renowned for their extremely good breakfasts and British style dishes.   The only difference between the two restaurants is that the portions are slightly smaller at Restaurant 99.   The decor at this spacious venue is fresh and inviting, with cane furniture and a terrace area for eating al fresco.   The small menu is the creation of Chefs Montree and Noi who presents a range of breakfasts (similar to those at Papa David) with a choice of various delightful dishes made up with ingredients such as Sausages, Beans, Bacon, Eggs with Jam and Toast, plus Coffee or Tea, and all at 99 baht, except Scrambled Eggs on Toast which is sold at 75 baht.   There is a fine, but small (to date) assortment of freshly cut Sandwiches around 75 baht for Tuna, plus that great British snack favourite, Beans on Toast at a mere 65 baht.  All the main course dishes are 99 baht!  Dishes include Cheese Burger with Chips, English Sausages with Mashed Potato, Chicken Fillet with Chips, Beef Croquette, Spaghetti Bolognese, plus that other great British favourite dish, good old Fish and Chips.   There are also authentic Thai dishes available on the menu, from 85 baht to 99 baht for that very popular and tasty Tom Yam Khung (Spicy Prawn and Lemongrass Soup).  Desserts include Ice Cream at 30 baht, Sponge Cake at 65 baht and Apple Pie and Custard at 99 baht.  So far, that is it, but that is no reason to be dismissed too easily – the dishes available will satisfy most people’s approval, and as we found out when we sampled a few of the dishes, they turned out to be outstanding; the only difference is that the portions are fractionally smaller than normal.   First off we tried one of the 99 baht Breakfasts (which is available all day) and chose the traditional English style, with first class English Sausage, Back Bacon, Beans and Egg, with Jam, Butter and Toast.  Tasting great, especially the English style Sausage which was first class, being full of slightly spiced meat with no fat or gristle at all! We then tried the Beef Croquette dish, and just like the similar popular Dutch Sausage style recipe these tasted very good indeed, crispy crumb coating with a mixture of mashed Potato, Minced Beef and Herbs, which is traditionally served with Chips, Mustard and Mayonnaise.  It was then on to more of those delicious Sausages, this time served with Buttered Mashed Potato and Peas. Excellent!  Last to appear was traditional Fish and Chips! Good tasting fillet of Dory fish coated in crunchy Batter, served with homemade Chips. To be honest, the portion seemed normal, as what any fine restaurant would serve up!  To end the meal, we chose the very tasty English style Apple Pie with homemade Custard.  Yummy!

Drinks are available, with Chang beer at 55 baht and Heineken at 65 baht a bottle. Tea at 30 baht a cup, and Coffee at 40 baht! Expresso is on hand at 40 baht with Latte and Cappuccino at 45 baht.  So if you are in the area, call in – you won’t be disappointed!
