The Brass Monkey Bar

As we heard that the food was particularly good, it was off to East Pattaya this week for a visit to a very popular Dutch run bar called The Brass Monkey.  This family orientated bar is located on Soi Nernplubwan, opposite the Vientiane Restaurant.   This very comfy bar certainly pays tribute to Holland by being decked out all in orange (even the waitresses wear orange hats).   It is quite spacious, and it needs to be because of the multi assortment of free games available here, such as Darts, with matches held every

Tuesday; and quite a few Pool tables, where many a tournament is held every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.  There is also a nice feel to the lounge area where everybody is welcome to watch a wealth of sport on the HD TVs.  So, onto the food!  The substantial menu offers both Western and Thai dishes, with an emphasis on some very tasty Dutch favourites.   There is a good value All Day Breakfast available and for a very reasonable price of 140 baht one can enjoy a plate full of Bacon, Eggs, Sausage, Black Pudding and Beans and a cup of Coffee.  Other breakfast favourites include Scrambled or Poached Eggs on Toast (80 baht).  Other main course dishes include Spaghetti Bolognese (110 baht), Steak Pie and Chips (140 baht) and Cottage Pie (140 baht).

They also offer an authentic Indian Curry (80 baht) and Crispy Fried Chicken at 120 baht.   Most Thai dishes come in at around 70 baht, with that popular dish of Tom Yam Khung (Spicy Prawn and Lemongrass Soup) at only 80 baht.   Indeed, the food is very good and tasty, but one thing that shines out here is the Dutch (and Belgian) appetizers, such as Dutch imported Bitterballen, Frikandellen and Kaassouffle (Cheese Croquettes), and all at an amazing 80 baht per serving.  Indeed, the choice was made the moment we saw these on the menu.  The Frikandellen (Sausage) is exceptionally tasty, especially when smothered with the equally imported Curried Tomato Ketchup dip. The same can be said about the Kaassouffle Cheese Croquettes. This crispy coated dish filled with melted cheese is so moreish, particularly with homemade Mayonnaise and this unique tasting Ketchup.  Another fine tasting appetizer here are the deep fried Chicken Nuggets (80 baht).  For the main course we sampled a very nice bowl of Beef

Stew (110 baht), filled with tender Beef, Potatoes and Peas in very rich brown gravy.  This was followed by traditional and good tasting Fish and Chips (160 baht) served with Peas and Onion Rings.

Then it was onto two substantial bowls of Macaroni recipes – one with Prawns (80 baht) and the other with tender Chicken pieces at 70 baht.  All the dishes were nicely presented and came with free bread and an assortment of sauces.  Finally, for dessert we had to go for a plate of Swiss Emmenthal Cheese and
deliciously gooey French Camembert Cheese which went perfectly with sliced Dutch Apple, and all rounded off with a fresh cup of Dutch Douwe Egberts coffee.  Alcoholic drinks are quite reasonable, with ice cold Chang at 50 baht or 70 for large bottle,

Heineken at 70 baht and Cider at 75 baht a bottle.  So, if you are ever in this area, pop in and get a real Dutch and Thai welcome from the management and staff at The Brass Monkey Bar.  Telephone: 087 129 8340.
