Dicks Cafe

The very popular Dicks Cafe in the Jomtien

Complex recently celebrated its third anniversary on the 21st November with a special Isarn evening,

hosted by Swiss owner Lukas Habersaat. The celebration turned out to be a roaring success in entertaining the many guests with a colourful production by musicians using Pong Lang instruments, together with traditional Isarn style singing and dancing which was beautifully performed by people from the Kalasin province. Dicks Cafe arrived in Jomtien three years ago after the great success of its sister restaurant, Dicks Cafe in Bangkok which has been running for nearly seven years which belongs to the Moana Hotel and Resort Property in Bangkok. Like the Bangkok Dicks Cafe, the Jomtien branch offers the same range of delicious and authentic Thai and Western style food, with the added attraction of being near to the beautiful Jomtien Beach only three minutes walk away. Tucked away just inside the fashionable Jomtien Complex, Dicks Cafe seats 80 guests in both its air cooled restaurant or outside in its delightful garden terrace area, complete with lush greenery and a splendid assortment of orchids, plants and water features. The menu caters to all tastes but concentrates mainly on an excellent selection of Thai recipes all very reasonably priced from 70 baht to 150 baht, with popular dishes such as Tom Yam Kung, a traditional Thai spicy shrimp soup costs 120 baht, Prawn Cakes (140 baht) and Green Curry with Chicken in Coconut Milk costing 150 baht. Besides Thai, there are Chinese, with good noodle dishes such as Chinese Noodles with Shrimp for 90 baht and Japanese dishes with Sukiyaki (100 baht), Shrimp and vegetable Tempura for 120 baht and Yaki Soba Noodles with Pork for 100 baht. Dicks Cafe also offers a good variety of Western style dishes including snacks, soups and salads with a very good mixed green salad (60 baht), freshly cut sandwiches (70 baht), Pasta dishes such as Spaghetti Bolognese (100 baht) and Burgers (80 baht). There are also Special Dishes of the Day such as Pork Tenderloin and Rice (180 baht), Pepper Steak (190 baht) and Beef Stroganoff (190 baht).

Together with an All Day Breakfast with all the expected items such as bacon, eggs, sausages etc., (120 baht) one can find something to enjoy from this interesting menu, even if its only a cup of their excellent coffee (50 baht) and a slice of cake. We started with a western recipe of Pumpkin Soup with sliced Sausage (80 baht), which was a very flavoursome creamy tasting soup with sliced Frankfurter sausage to add texture to the dish. We then tried a delicious pasta dish, Spaghetti Carbormare (120 baht). Perfectly cooked (al dente) Spaghetti coated with a mixture of Seafood (shrimps, calamari, mussels) and a creamy Carbonara style sauce. We then turned our attention to a few Thai, Chinese and Japanese recipes that Dicks Cafe is noted for. First was a Chinese recipe of Lemon Chicken (100 baht). Succulent pieces of pan fried chicken breast coated in sesame seeds and lemon presented on a bed of finely shredded cabbage that has a delicious crispy texture when deep fried. The Japanese dish we chose was Yaki Soba with Pork (100 baht). This was a very satisfying portion of Soba Noodles with Pork tenderloin and vegetables in a tangy sauce. For the Thai dishes, we tried Hor Mok Talay. (150 baht) This superb dish can only be described as a seafood mousse, a wonderful mixture of seafood and red curry blended with coconut milk cooked and served in a banana leaf boat. The other Thai dish was an Isarn favourite called Somtam Talay. This is the very popular spicy green papaya salad with the addition of seafood and tasted great. Dicks Cafe offers a very good selection of wines priced from around 710 baht for a Merlot to 1580 baht for a Barossa Shiraz, plus very decent house wines at 340 baht for a 50 cl carafe or 140 baht a g
