Chaucer and Rhubarb Crumble The Canterbury Tales Cafe have moved and opened a bigger and better restaurant (just three months ago) across the street on Soi Chaiyapoon, between Third Road and Soi Buakhao.
The Canterbury Tales is run by Mr. Dave Collier, a jovial Englishman from the ancient cathedral city of Canterbury hence the restaurants name! It is indeed, a very cozy spacious establishment decorated in traditional English pub style that provides a great selection of down to earth homemade British pub style food, with authentic pub grub such as Meat Roasts and all the trimmings. Dishes include Roast Lamb and Mint Sauce (280 baht) and Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding (200 baht). They have excellent Beef Stew, (very good value at 100 baht). Canterbury Tales make their own homemade Meat Pies, including a very popular Steak and Kidney Pie (160 baht). Other favourites such as Fish and Chips sell at an amazing 100 baht, and Cumberland Sausage and Mash (130 baht). The menu also includes a few international style recipe favourites, such as Spaghetti Bolognese (120 baht), Spare Ribs (120 baht), and Gammon Steak (120 baht). If it is a steak you want then try an excellent T-bone steak and Chips for a very reasonable 280 baht or an enormous Mixed Grill for 195 baht. The menu also has a very good range of Thai dishes which are geared towards farang tastes at very good prices, 60 to 90 baht. They also provide good value all day breakfasts (from 75 baht) with all the expected items such as bacon, eggs, sausage, beans and doorstop size toast. If you are on a serious health kick they have one very healthy style breakfast (60 baht) with yoghurt, cereal, fresh fruit and berries. Snacks, burgers and sandwiches start at 60 baht. To round off a good meal, then try one of Daves homemade Crumbles (Apple or Rhubarb) and Custard for 75 baht a portion. If this is not enough to tempt your taste buds, you can order authentic Indian food from the menu of a local Indian Restaurant, (which is a favourite with Dave) and will be delivered fresh and hot within 30 minutes guaranteed. The bar is very well stocked, with Chang at 40 baht, Tiger Beer and Singh at 55 baht, Heineken at 60 baht a bottle. Wine (we tried an excellent Merlot) is sold at an amazing 90 baht a full glass. Not only is the Canterbury Tales a great value eating place, it is also a fine guesthouse offering guests 20 room quality accommodation upstairs. The 55 seater Canterbury Tales is quite unique in that it offers a fantastic library of second hand paperback and hardback books and magazines, available in Thai, German and of course English. In fact, there are about 10,000 books available on the shelves stretching the whole length of the spacious restaurant. It is indeed great value, if you buy a book you get 50% off the next one purchased. They also offer a free Internet service and Wifi hotspot to all their customers and guests.
Canterbury Tales has a good gathering of regular customers plus members of the Pattaya Expats Club, who meet here on the last Thursday of each month for a social gathering with old hands and new club members enjoying the excellent breakfasts. So to the food! We tried one of the popular Breakfasts, which was a plate filled with smoked back bacon, eggs, pork sausages, fried bread and beans. Very good value at 95 baht! Then we sampled Minced Beef and Mash (120 baht), a dish of delicious top quality minced meat cooked with vegetables and served with fluffy mashed potato. The other meat dish we tried was the Roast Lamb (280 baht). A generous plate full of sliced Roast Lamb together with fresh vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and homemade Mint Sauce. This was followed by some of the Thai dishes from the menu. All extremely good tasting and authentically prepared and went down well with the Thai crew. To end the meal, we had to try one of Daves Crumbles. In fact, we tried both the fresh Apple and impo
