Star of the Day was not a Steak Sandwich
Monday the 12th February: The Emerald (Stableford).
The Emerald was host to a Stableford Competition in two Fights: A Flight 0 to 18 and B Flight 19 up. The Course on the day was OK, but as usual these days it was overbooked having two hundred golfers on the day, including our twelve groups. Mick O'Meara took the A Flight with an amazing 40 points ahead of Bill Plath in second with 37 points, Marty Allred third on a count back from Elias Magnusson in fourth, both with 36 points and Rob Brown in fifth with 34 points. Agnes Gardner, en route to retirement, took the B Flight with 35 points on count back ahead of John Swanson in second with Jesper Rasmusson in third with 32 points with Jannie Jaspers in fourth on a count back from Arthur Bailey in fifth, both with 30 points. I could tell about a full 13 groups plus that went up there full of the joys of Spring or the quick and efficient booking in. I could tell you about the Course that is still in reasonable condition at this time of year, despite the fact that the bunkers have more holes in them than Blackpool Beach and the holes in the greens are so worn they looked square. We could talk about the pleasant staff and the efficient way we were sent on our way including a photocopy of our start list to help the starter. But 'Oh Dear' we really do have to talk about the Restaurant and its total fall from the high standards it used to have. It is now a shambles and a well known laughing matter to all players. So to the Course and off we went into a light cooling wind, and the pace of play was pretty good. Despite its problems we got around the Course pretty quick and were soon in the changing rooms and into the showers, enough said. Showered and changed it was into the Restaurant for a snack and a cold one while we waited for the other players to arrive. The beer came quickly for me, for others it took ages even after ordering three times and the special drink of the day was not available. As the tables filled up it got worse, and the staff members were constantly going from table to table to ask if the food in their hands, was theirs, they had no clue. Most did not get what they wanted even after re-ordering and before we were finished and it was asked for, the bill was there and was usually wrong. I asked for a Steak Sandwich and French Fries, 140 Baht, and it was the worst thing on a plate I have seen in Thailand; they did change it. Apart from this everything was fine, especially the door out. This is 'Sad' because the service here used to be excellent so something has gone seriously wrong here.
Back at the Cafe Kronborg the players awaited the results, and one of them bought a Cafe Kronborg Steak Sandwich to show how it should be done, my mouth watered. So to the results, and in the A Division, 0 to 19, the winner was Mike Winfield with Net 70 on count back over David Gardner in second. In third was Aussie Larry Simpson with Net 71 with a three way count back for fourth being won by Jen Nissen with Rob Brown and Derek Brook just losing out. In the B Flight the Winner was Wayne Koch with a Net 66 with Jan Lovgren in second with Net 67 on count back over Arthur Bailey in third. In fourth was Toy Theobald with a Net 69 on count back over Peter Hammond. So to the 'Star of the Day' and the winner of the Kronborg Mug was Jimmy Flanagan with a Net 65. Well done indeed Jimmy!
