Punch & Judy Pub
Being lovers of traditional pubs, especially British pubs, we paid a visit to the latest of Pattaya’s theme pubs, the Punch and Judy. Located opposite the Eden Hotel on Soi 8 off Thepprasit Road this enchanting pub, run by British entrepreneurs, Rob and Jamie, is accurately styled as a characteristic London inn. This new watering hole treasure pays tribute to a famous old London local, Punch and Judy in fashionable Covent Garden; and of course the legendary puppet characters, cheeky Mr. Punch and his ‘hard done by’ wife Judy. The pub is excellently laid out around a central bar, surrounded by booths with comfortable seating for drinking and dining. There is also an unobtrusive sports section, and even a bit of Victorian nostalgia – ladies only area!
Drinks include draught Boddingtons, Magners Irish Cider, plus excellent Guinness (all at 190 baht a pint – 170 baht in happy hours). House Wine is sold by the glass at 120 baht. Bottles are well priced, such as Jacobs Creek 2007 Shiraz red at 990 baht, or Semillon Chardonnay 2007 white at 890 baht.
The menu is very ambitious, offering popular traditional ‘pub grub’, plus Thai cuisine and some unusual recipes one would not normally find on a pub menu. Breakfasts from 95 baht for Eggs on Toast, 140 baht for time-honored English or go for a larger serving, or American Breakfast feast - both at 160 baht! There is a fine range of Sandwiches, Baguettes and Jacket Potatoes with delicious fillings - off the bone Ham and English Mustard (95 baht) or Brie and Bacon (210 baht); all served with homemade Coleslaw and Salad garnish. Light Bites such as Ploughman’s Lunch – Cheddar, off bone Ham, half a Pork Pie and Scotch Egg, Pickled Onions etc., at 290 baht. Soups at 95 baht and Starters from 110 baht for Sea Bass and Shrimp Fishcake to 190 baht for Caprese Salad (Mozzarella and Tomato). Main courses from 180 baht for Cordon Bleu Breaded Pork fillet, Ham and Cheese, hand cut Chips and Salad to 450 baht for Judy’s Mixed Grill – a whopping variety of Meat Steaks, Cumberland Sausage, Egg, Mushrooms and Chips. So, what did we try from this tempting menu? A first class trio of starters: Prawn Cocktail (120 baht) with plump succulent Prawns on Lettuce with a fine Marie Rose Sauce. Followed by two immensely enjoyable dishes of fried Breaded Brie wedges with tangy Mango Chutney (190 baht), and 5 star tasting Sea Bass and Shrimp Fishcake with sweet Chili Sauce. Then to the main courses: Top class Shank of tender braised Lamb, plus first rate Shepherd’s Pie (210 baht) - baked minced Lamb and Vegetables, with Cheddar and Mashed Potato topping. Finally, a house specialty – Salmon Wellington (330 baht) – an exceptional tasting fillet of Norwegian Salmon wrapped in Pastry, served on Spinach with White Wine Sauce. A scrumptious Banoffee Pie (95 baht) and Cheese and Biscuits (295 baht) ended a very satisfying good value meal experience at Punch and Judy.
There are ongoing promotions such as Sunday Roast Dinners (from 280 baht), food and drink set price combos, or try your luck to win pints of Heineken in the live TV football league competition.
